ENT4230 – Entrepreneurial Finance

Course content

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to financial management as experienced by an entrepreneur. The course is broadly scoped, covering a wide range of subjects, including financial planning and management, company valuation, sources of risk capital, fundraising and strategies for promoting your venture to attract partners and investors. The purpose of the course is to equip you with knowledge and skills necessary to financially manage and fund an attractive investment opportunity.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, you will:

  • Have a solid understanding of financial planning and management, including income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements and working capital management
  • Have advanced knowledge on financial modelling, investment analysis and valuation methodologies.
  • Be able to plan and manage the finances of new ventures and to carry out investment- and valuation analyses on individual investment projects.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the theoretical foundations of company valuation, as well as practical methodologies for evaluating real-world companies
  • Have advanced knowledge on different sources of risk capital including seed- and venture capital funds, how these types of investors operate, what they are looking for and how they structure their deals.
  • Be able to seek funding from different sources of risk capital funds including developing effective fundraising strategies, attracting interest from investors and negotiating sound terms.
  • Be able to present your business effectively to external stakeholders (i.e. potential investors, partners and senior employees).

The course is available only for students admitted to the study programme Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (master).

Teaching

Weekly classes throughout the semester that include lectures, in-class activities and group exercises. In addition, readings and group/individual assignments between classes.

Due to the significant amount of group exercises and in-class activities in this course, attendance of the lectures is mandatory. You will need to attend at least 80% of the lectures in order to pass the course.

Examination

The course grade is calculated based on the following components:

  • A final group assignment including an oral group presentation accounting for in total 50 % of the score.? Students in each group are given the same score. Group members who do not fulfill their obligations can be scored individually from the group. ??
  • Individual assignments/quizzes given during the semester accounting for in total 50 % of the overall score.

Failing a graded assignment does still allow participation in the remaining exams.? All exams and assignments must be taken during the same semester.

Completion of mandatory attendance is required in order to pass the course.

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

In this course, postponed exams are not offered for exam candidates who are ill before the exam or who become ill during the exam. A deferred submission deadline may be offered. Deadlines may be extended up to 7 days; the duration of the extension depends on the duration of the exam.?The illness must be documented with a doctor's certificate dated no later than the ordinary submission date. You must submit the doctor's certificate to the Student Administration at IFI before the submission deadline for the home exam.
