The final peer review e-mail was ambiguous in terms of when you need to contact us. Like with peer review for assignment 2, you only need to let us know if you have issues contacting your peer. Thank you to all who have reported successful pairings.
Hi everyone!
We're getting close to the end of the semester, and have now uploaded earlier year's exams to this folder, as well as a new trial exam for 2025 in this folder.
The reason we have made a trial exam, is that the exam format will be a bit different than in previous iterations if IN3050/4050: Whereas earlier years have had written answers to all questions, we will this year have a mix, with 70% of the points coming from multiple choice questions, and 30% from text answers. The trial exam will help you see what to expect, but the older exams are also very relevant to get an idea of the topics we ask about and the knowledge we expect.
For help with the trial exam or the older exams, we encourage you to go to the g...
While the peer assignments can differ a bit, quite a few of you will be put in the same pairs as for assignment 2. This is not a mistake.
E-mails with instructions for assignment 3 peer review are now sent out. If you have not received an e-mail with instructions, please contact me right away at pettemae@ifi.uio.no . Please reply to each other quickly, and note that for this review you are not required to pass assignment 3, and you can chose questions to accommodate for your reviewees completion level. You still need to pass assignment 3 eventually, of course :)
Dear All,
Below follows some information from colleagues at IFI that are starting up a new course that may be relevant to some of you.

As of autumn 2025, the Department of Informatics will offer a new course “Data Governance” IN5560. The course is going to provide an interdisciplinary, sociotechnical perspective on the topic of data governance, by unpacking the organizational, technological, and legal dimensions of collecting, sharing and re-using data on a societal, organizational, and individual level. The topics covered in the course include, but are not limited to: data management, data architecture, data privacy and law, and data as foundations for artificial intelligence technologies.
The course is going to be based on a case-based research methodology, where students will be working on real-world cases related to these topics, both from a Norwegian and from an international context. Student...
Hi everyone!
The group session today, April 28th at 10:15, is unfortunately cancelled. Please visit one of the other group sessions this week for assistance or repetition of the syllabus. And hope to see you at the interactive session today at 12!
Best,
Kai
Thank you to those who have contacted us when there have been issues. The last (extended) deadline for contacting us regarding issues was the 11th (16th) of April. We have done our best to reassign those who have contacted us, but if you have still not heard from your reviewer or reviewee, please make use of the group sessions to find people to review and be reviewed by. Remember that it is necessary to both review and be reviewed to pass the assignment.
While some students have an extended deadline, most people should have been in contact with their peers by now. Unless explicitly affected by the issue with wrongly assigned peers, for whom the deadline is tomorrow. We remind everyone that fulfilling both roles are necessary to pass the peer review. During the week after Easter it will be possible to go to group sessions to find peers, for those who have not been able to contact their peers even after reassignment.
Students who passed the obligatory assignments during a previous semester were mistakenly added to the pool of peer-review pairs. These have to be manually reassigned. If you have not received an e-mail from your peer this might be the case, but you will receive a new peer soon. Those affected by this will be given an extension to the April 11th deadline. You do not need to redo the peer review if you passed earlier, even if you received an e-mail on Friday.
All active students should have received an e-mail where they have been assigned a person to peer-review for assignment 2. If you have not received any e-mail like this, contact pettemae@ifi.uio.no .
The third and last mandatory assignment is published now. The deadline is April 22nd. Note that there is an extra task (part 1.6) for the master-level students (IN4050), which is optional for the IN3050 students. There are also some additional YouTube videos with more details on PCA on the Unsupervised Learning page.
Good luck!
We continue with another guest lecture next week! In the first part of the lecture, postdoctoral researcher Benedikte Wallace will talk about her research on modelling dance moves with ML.
See you next Monday!
Yves
The second mandatory exercise is now published. The deadline is March 28th. Note that for the master-level students (IN4050) there are extra tasks, which are optional for the IN3050 students.
Good luck!
Hi IN3050/4050 students!
The two group sessions on Wednesday 14:15 - 16:00 will not be held this week. Those of you who were planning to go to these are free to join any of the other groups - see the course schedule for details.
Have a nice week!
-Kai
Hi everyone!
The Jupyter notebook covered in Viljen's Numpy Tutorial today can be found here.
See you!

Hi everyone!
An important piece of information about next week, that you may have already noticed in the course schedule:
-There will be no ordinary Monday lecture on March 3rd
-Two of next week's group sessions will do a tutorial on a selected topic. The intention is to help those of you who feel you are lacking some fundamental knowledge, as these topics will become important in the coming lectures and mandatory assignments. The topics are:
- Zedan will in his Monday session give an introduction to linear algebra, including fundamentals of vectors and matrices, and how these are applied in Machine Learning.
- On Tuesday, Viljen will cover the basics of numpy, which is the most common Python library for working with vectors and matrices - that is important for many topics in this course, including for the final two mandatory exercises....
Hi everyone,
Mandatory Assignment 1, with deadline February 28, is now online - see the Mandatory Assignments folder. Note that for master-level students (IN4050) there is an extra task, which is optional for IN3050-students.
Good luck!
Hi everyone!
Thank you for an excellent first lecture yesterday! A recording of it can be found linked in the course schedule. Next week, we will start having "interactive sessions", as described here. As preparation for the first interactive session, we recommend that you have a look at the video lectures covering the first part on Evolutionary Algorithms.
See you!
-Kai
Hi everyone!
We look forward to starting the semester soon, on January 20th. If you feel a need for revisiting or getting familiar with some of the mathematics behind Machine Learning, you can already now have a look at this document on Geometry and Linear Algebra.
See you soon!
-Kai
