Request for change of display name or user name

In UiO's data systems, we use your name from the National Population Register. If you are not registered there, we use the name from your passport. To some extent, you can choose which name is displayed in emails and in the people search at uio.no. See the Brukerinfo (Simple user administration at UiO) under the Person tab and Display Name to see what you can choose from.

If you have compelling reasons to display a different name, we can make exceptions in some of the data systems at UiO. This may be relevant in cases of gender incongruence or if displaying your name poses a serious disadvantage or puts you at risk in your home situation or home country. It may also apply if your username has offensive connotations. You may display a different first name in platforms such as Canvas and in emails.

Request for change of username

Change of username may be allowed if your user name has an offensive meaning. If you are unsure of your username, you can check at https://passord.uio.no/forgottenUsername.

The username is the identifier that allows the IT systems to recognize you. Usually, the username will reflect your name, but there is no rule that states it must be this way. Most systems at UiO do not display your username to other persons, but there are exceptions, such as the email system and Microsoft 365.

Change of display name does not apply to all systems

You cannot have a different name in systems such as Studentweb, the Diploma Registry (Vitnem?lsportalen), or the Student ID app. You also cannot have a different name on transcripts, diplomas, or access cards. These systems interact with other official registers in Norway, and they must display the same name as your official identification.

The Department of Education Services  at UiO processes requests for change of display name or username.

You can also change and register new information about yourself in the National Population Register, including your name and legal gender. UiO will automatically receive the updated information from the National Population Register.
