reMarkable – not approved for use at UiO

Assessment of reMarkable: Not recommended, can be used for green data

See also the service page for reMarkable at UiO for more information.

The reMarkable tablet should not be acquired or used at UiO.

For users of reMarkable at UiO, this means that you will not receive support from the IT department regarding the device, even if it has been acquired through UiO funds and/or approved UiO suppliers.

Furthermore, this means that the use of synchronization software for the device on UiO-operated machines will not be approved.

  • The reason for this is that the tablets’ built-in storage cannot be encrypted. Such unencrypted storage can only be used for green data. If the tablet is set up to synchronize and retrieve documents from storage solutions approved for up to yellow data at UiO (UiO-Dropbox, Google Suite, and Microsoft 365 (OneDrive and SharePoint)), this would violate UiO's information security regulations.
  • UiO has not entered into a data processing agreement for reMarkable's own cloud service. Access to important functionality requires users to establish a continuous service subscription. The subscription is necessary for synchronizing data to cloud services for which UiO has a data processor agreement.
  • For definitions of green and yellow data, see UiO's website on information classification and UiO's storage guide.
  • On this basis, the IT Director decided on February 15, 2022, that reMarkable tablets should not be acquired at UiO, as the cost is too high in relation to what they can be used for at UiO. Privately acquired tablets can be used for green data.
  • USIT is monitoring the development of reMarkable and will reassess the classification and recommendation if the tablets can be encrypted in the future.
  • September 24, 2024: reMarkable Pro has been launched with encrypted storage. These devices cannot be enrolled in UiO's operational setup and remotely managed (e.g., remotely wiped in case of loss). UiO's assessment remains that such devices should not be acquired or used at UiO.
  • April 28, 2025: A trial of the reMarkable with the Enterprise solution is currently ongoing at UiO. However, this does not change the general recommendation that reMarkable should not be used.
