The Life Science Building: Purpose and Process

Gunnar Dick is an assistant director in the Estate Department at UiO and responsible for the Life Science Building reception project. This project includes planning, preparation and execution of the transition from a building project to the operational phase for the Life Science Building.
Natrium — a new opportunity for Life Science in Gothenburg

Mats Lilja has worked as a project manager for 25 years on both small and large building projects at Swedish universities with focus on users with laboratories and complex space needs. He has worked at the University of Gothenburg since 2018 and since October 2024, he has held the position of property strategist and is working on, among other things, an update of the university's Strategic premises provision plan 2026–2050.

Session 2
Sustainable space utilization

Presenters: Satu Kankaala (Aalto University Campus and Real Estate) and Camilla Westerborn (Swedish University of Agriculture)
This session, facilitated by Satu Kankaala and Camilla Westerborn, will gather insights from Nordic universities sharing their experiences in space utilization in university campuses. To learn from each other and to facilitate discussion, Satu and Camilla have invited universities from different Nordic countries to describe the goals, models and methods for efficient, flexible and responsible use of spaces.
There will be a short introduction to the topic, followed by the university cases:

Session 3
Building 208, DTU: The future learning environment created with focus on conservation and recycling

Presenter: Anders Tyrrestrup (Aart architects)

Building 208 at Technical University of Denmark, constructed in 1967 with traditional auditoriums and laboratory facilities, is one of the seven original functionalist specialty buildings on the Lyngby Campus. Respecting the original architectural quality, Building 208 has been transformed and equipped with modern teaching spaces, support laboratories, and additional relaxation areas.

Aarhus University Campus: From a historical hospital to the campus of the future

The development plan for Aarhus University Campus provides new perspectives on how to convert Aarhus Municipal Hospital into a campus integrated into the city, where Aarhus University interacts with the local urban and commercial environment in entirely new ways.

Transforming Blindern campus

Presenter: Tarja Koskinen (University of Oslo)
Tarja Koskinen is the head of Section for Development Planning, Art and Cultural Heritage at the University of Oslo. During her career, Tarja has worked both as a designing architect and with governmental guidelines for management of listed buildings, as well as with design of modern workspaces. At the Subdivision for Campus Development, Tarja has a central role in coordinating the transformation of approx. 80 000 square metres at Nedre Blindern.

Guided tours of the Life Science Building and the buildings and arts at Campus Blindern

All participants will be divided into smaller groups and visit two different tours:
- The Life Science Building, guided tour by Statsbygg, the Norwegian government's building commissioner, property manager and developer.
- The buildings and art at Campus Blindern, guided tours by Bj?rn Vidar Johansen (Museum of University and Science History), Charlotte Wiik (UiO's art manager) and Ane Guldahl (Head of Landscape Services).

The UiO knife stabbing incident

Presenters: Kenneth Nielsen and Ingunn Bj?rnsdóttir (University of Oslo)
Kenneth Nielsen is a former Army officer from the Recon Cavalry and has served in several operational units at home and in international operations. He has further worked in several countries as an advisor and instructor in the prevention and management of school and mass shootings. In this capacity he has co-developed the SARTOV-program (a holistic approach to threats and violence in the education sector). The program is both shared with the national resource website sikresiden.no and in the university sector in Norway. Since 2015, Kenneth has worked as senior security advisor at UiO, working on threat assessments, resilience, incident and crisis management.

Ingunn Bj?rnsdóttir is the associate professor who was most harmed in the knife attack at the University of Oslo on August 24th, 2023. She was the practice coordinator for the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience, which is the six months of training in a pharmacy that EU regulations require pharmacy students to undergo.
UiO's Security Operation Centre

The Security Operation Centre is responsible for access control, surveillance and security services at the University of Oslo. They are also responsible for coordinating the initial emergency response in the event of a crisis, until an emergency management team is established. The Security Operation Centre is manned 24 hours a day, all year round.

Student Learning Centre Aleksandria — renovation and new concept

Presenter: Sanna Kujala (Helsinki University Library)
Sanna Kujala is an Information Specialist at Helsinki University Library, where she focuses on digital customer service and the development of virtual library services. With a Master’s degree in Geoinformatics, Sanna brings a unique perspective to the evolving landscape of education and digital environments. She has been involved in projects such as creating virtual library tours and enhancing customer communications, as well as contributing to the development of virtual education spaces. Sanna has published on the topic of virtual learning environments and is passionate about the future of education spaces and the role of emerging technologies in supporting learning.
From empty spaces to student places — examples from University of Bergen

Kristina Kvareng Skorpen is a highly skilled professional at the University of Bergen, where she holds the positions of Interior Architect at the Real Estate and Facilities Department. Kristina's expertise spans across retail design and interior architecture with the main focus on creating functional, aesthetically pleasing environments that enhance the University's facilities for the students.
Healthy campus — a method for an attractive campus

Alexandra Haglund is a project coordinator at Ume? University, where she coordinates the Healthy Campus project. Her work focuses on integrating health and sustainability to create a campus environment that promotes well-being and supports long-term sustainable development.

Trond Morten Trondsen is the director of SiO Health, which offers health services to students at 27 educational institutions in Oslo, Norway.
